The Rat opens the twelve-branch cycle, paired with Zi — the midnight branch. The classical texts picture it as the nimble creature of the storehouse: alert, thrifty, and never far from an opening others have missed.
The Rat belongs to the branch Zi (子), which corresponds to years such as 1984, 1996, 2008 and 2020 — but the switch happens at lichun (early February), not on January 1st. Zi also marks the hours of 11pm–1am and the first stirring of the Water element. People born late at night, in Rat years, or on lichun-boundary dates should confirm with a calculated chart rather than guess.
In the granaries of an agricultural world, the rat was the animal that always found the grain — and always kept some in reserve. The image is not of recklessness but of readiness: small, quick, watching. Zi being the midnight branch, the texts also associate it with the moment before things begin — the quiet hour in which plans are made.
In a four-pillar chart, Zi may appear in the year, month, day or hour pillar — each position colors a different layer of life. Zi also hides Gui (癸) Water within it, so the Rat carries water imagery even when the surface elements look dry. The year animal is the famous one; the day pillar is the one classical readers weigh most heavily.
Each pairing below has its own page: the classical relationship, the two temperaments side by side, and reflection prompts. Read them as lenses on working styles, not as filters for people.
