Paired with the branch Yin, the Tiger is the mountain predator of the pre-dawn forest: the classical texts give it courage, territory, and the first movement of the wood element.
The Tiger belongs to the branch Yin (寅), corresponding to years such as 1986, 1998, 2010 and 2022 — with the switch at lichun in early February. Yin marks the hours of 3am–5am and is Wood in its Yang, beginning-to-rise phase: the image of a force that moves first and asks later.
The tiger owns its range. It hunts alone, marks its territory, and does not perform for the herd. Classical commentary on Yin emphasizes beginnings: Yin is the third branch and the point where dormant wood suddenly pushes upward — which is why Tiger imagery is less about aggression than about initiative, the willingness to move into open country before others do.
Yin hides Jia (甲) Wood, Bing (丙) Fire and Wu (戊) Earth — a branch already charged with growth, expression and structure. In a full chart, Yin in the day or hour pillar reads quite differently from Yin in the year; a calculated chart shows where the tiger actually sits.
